Stuv microMega Inset Wood Burning Fire
These stoves are built to order with a 4-6 week lead time.
Many may consider woodburning stove technology as traditional and unchanging but nothing could be further from the truth.
The Stûv microMega Fire is a great example. The winner of both the Hearth and Home 'Best Appliance' and 'Product of the Year' awards in 2012, this fire represents the latest thinking from the Belgian Stûv company. The name refers to the small fuel area ('micro') and the wide area of heat produced ('Mega'). The indication is, of course, that a small amount of fuel produces a disproportionate amount of warmth.
The microMega insert with retractable door, can produce an output of 5 to 12kW of heat with an efficiency of 80%, using a single damper which distributes air to 5 points in the stove, and optimises combustion. This is more than enough for a large room and this, together with a combustion system that burns the fuel completely with little or no particle emissions, means this fire has been passed by DEFRA for use on smoke controlled areas.
The exceptional flames are kept behind a huge area of glass that is deliberately airtight to ensure the best combustion and to ensure all the heat goes into the room and not up the chimney. Despite this tight seal around the glass, the window is simply to facilitate adding fuel and the door opens from the top for maintenance. Normal operation of the stove takes place with the glass closed, as it is the most economical and environmentally friendly, however, the microMega can also occasionally operate as an open fire, ideal for grilling food in the winter.
To obtain a stove which is capable of producing a lower heat output, Stûv has reduced the volume of the combustion chamber, and in this restricted volume, the temperature is higher and more uniform, improving the quality of combustion. This is turn will provide higher efficiency, and a fire which is more beautiful to look at.
To help the airflow in modern, low-energy houses, an outside air source kit is available as is a choice of frames and surrounds.
