Many may consider woodburning stove technology as traditional and unchanging but nothing could be further from the truth.

The Stûv microMega Fire is a great example. The winner of both the Hearth and Home 'Best Appliance' and 'Product of the Year' awards in 2012, this fire represents the latest thinking from the Belgian Stûv company. The name refers to the small fuel area ('micro') and the wide area of heat produced ('Mega'). The indication is, of course, that a small amount of fuel produces a disproportionate amount of warmth.

Such clever thinking means the microMega can produce up to 11kW of heat with an efficiency of 80%. This is more than enough for a large room and this, together with a combustion system that burns the fuel completely with little or no particle emissions, means this fire has been passed by DEFRA for use on smoke controlled areas.

The flames are kept behind a huge area of glass that is deliberately airtight to ensure the best combustion and to ensure all the heat goes into the room and not up the chimney. Despite this tight seal around the glass, the window is simply to facilitate adding fuel and the door opens from the top for maintenance.

To help the airflow in modern, low-energy houses, an outside air source kit is available as is a choice of frames and surrounds. No wonder the Stûv microMega has won awards.
Please ensure you have your fire installed by an accredited HETAS engineer and that you fit a working carbon monoxide alarm.
