The Acanthus is an attractive plant originally found across Asia and the Mediterranean. It became popular as decoration on Corinthian columns, originating in ancient Greece, and later in Regency architecture and design.
It is hardly surprising that one of Chesney’s most popular fire surrounds is decorated with Acanthus leaf carvings.
The Chesney’s Acanthus fire surround is made from the beautiful, smooth Carrara marble (from Italy, not Greece – sorry) and has long tapered capitals, decorated with careful reeding. At the top of each leg are stylised Acanthus leaves that support a reeded shelf.
The whole effect is wholly pleasing and lends classical elegance to any stylish period home.
